Pointillisme: Provence continues Quayola’s investigation into high-precision laser scanning systems and their inherent imperfections.

Drawing a parallel between historical painting traditions and computational aesthetics, the project proposes new forms of landscape painting created by machines. Recreating conditions close to those in which late nineteenth-century plein-air painters worked, natural landscapes are here observed and analysed using complex technological systems and then reinterpreted through new modes of visual synthesis.

About the artist

Quayola — Италия

Quayola uses technology as a lens to explore the tensions and balance between seemingly opposing categories: real and artificial, figurative and abstract, old and new. In his immersive installations, he engages with symbolic imagery and techniques, reinterpreting them through contemporary technologies. Landscape painting, classical sculpture and iconography serve as starting points for his hybrid compositions.

Quayola’s work has been presented at leading institutions worldwide, including the V&A Museum (London), Park Avenue Armory (New York), National Art Center (Tokyo), UCCA (Beijing), How Art Museum (Shanghai), SeMA (Seoul), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Ars Electronica (Linz), Sonar Festival (Barcelona) and Sundance Film Festival. In 2013, Quayola received the Golden Nica at Ars Electronica.
