This project is an attempt to reimagine a thoroughly programmed public space. The artist embeds his work in the “urban living rooms” of Sverdlov Square, created by the Nizhny Novgorod Urban Development Institute in 2023.
In the city, people are surrounded by large amounts of sign-based information: signs, information boards, navigation systems and so on. In our everyday use of the city we tire of it easily, stop noticing it, or attach no significance to the messages it broadcasts, since our task is usually to find the optimal route from point A to point B.
But what if one stops and begins to perceive everything around — people, nature and information — as a kind of performance, in which we are both the main spectator and the main character? This is precisely the scenario on which the project is built. Ticker displays fill the square’s space and bring it to life, broadcasting qualitatively new and unusual text, provoking the city’s residents to reflect on what might actually be happening in this place.
